Rabat – Kylian Mbappe has won this season’s European Golden Boot after scoring 31 goals in La Liga and finishing top scorer at Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old netted a double in Real’s final game of the season, claiming top spot in the European rankings ahead of Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres (39 goals) and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah (29 goals).
Even though Viktor Gyökeres scored eight more league goals than Kylian Mbappe, he still finished second because of the weighted-points system used to rank players.
In Europe’s top five leagues Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1, each goal is worth 2 points.
Meanwhile, goals scored in leagues ranked 6th to 22nd in UEFA’s coefficient, such as the Portuguese Primeira Liga, are worth 1.5 points.
Mbappe has won this award for the first time since moving to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. He is the first Real Madrid player to win it since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2015 and the first to do so with over 30 goals since Lionel Messi in 2019.
He ended the campaign with 42 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions, making him Real Madrid’s best scorer in all competitions
Mbappe had a solid individual season, but he would have hoped for more team success. Real Madrid managed to win the European Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, but they missed out on bigger trophies.
However, there’s still a chance for Mbappe and Real Madrid to add another title under their new coach, Xabi Alonso.
They will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in the US on June 15. If Mbappe keeps scoring like this, the summer tournament could improve his chances for the Ballon d’Or.
